    Sharon Weill

    Associate Professor of International law at The American University of Paris

    Sharon Weill is an accomplished academic and legal professional with a diverse background in international law, human rights, and conflict studies. She currently serves as an Assistant Professor at The American University of Paris since 2018 and holds a PhD from the University of Geneva. In addition to her teaching role, she is an associate researcher at Sciences Po Paris and a member of the French National Consultative Committee for Human Rights (CNCDH). Furthermore, she was appointed by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees to serve as a judge in the French Asylum Courts (CNDA).

    Professor Weill's research interests revolve around the intersection of international and domestic law, politics of international law, law in conflict situations, and the functions of national courts. She has an extensive publication record including articles and book chapters on these topics. Her unique research approach combines legal doctrine with socio-political perspectives, incorporating trial ethnography methodologies. She has been undertaking empirical research within French courts, particularly focusing on terrorism trials as part of multidisciplinary groups for the Ministry of Justice since 2017. Moreover, her post-doctoral work on Guantanamo Bay military commissions was carried out at the Center for the Study of Law and Society, University of California, Berkeley from 2015 to 2016.

    Prior to her current roles, Sharon Weill was involved in significant academic and research projects. She was part of the 'Security in Transition' initiative at the London School of Economics (LSE) led by Professor Mary Kaldor. She also served as a research fellow at the Geneva Academy of International Humanitarian and Human Rights Law for several years. Furthermore, she is the author of the acclaimed book 'The Role of National Courts in Applying International Humanitarian Law' published by Oxford University Press in 2014 and the co-editor of 'The President on Trial: Prosecuting Hissène Habré' released by Oxford University Press in 2020.

    Sharon Weill's educational background includes earning her Doctor of Law (PhD) in International Law and International Legal Studies from the University of Geneva. She has held various esteemed positions such as Associate Professor of International Law at The American University of Paris, Judge at the French Asylum Court representing UNHCR, Assistant Professor at The American University of Paris, Associate Researcher and Senior Lecturer at Sciences Po, Visiting Scholar at the University of California, Berkeley, and Research Fellow at the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies.
