Sean MacAvaney

Sean MacAvaney is a research associate at the University of Glasgow and a member of the Terrier Team, with a background in Information Retrieval (IR) and Natural Language Processing (NLP).

He completed his Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Computer Science from Georgetown University, where he was a member of the IR Lab and an ARCS Endowed Scholar under the supervision of Nazli Goharian and Ophir Frieder.

Sean MacAvaney has a Master's degree in Computer Science and a Bachelor's degree in Software Engineering, both obtained from Georgetown University and Milwaukee School of Engineering, respectively.

Throughout his career, he has held various positions such as Lecturer in Machine Learning at the University of Glasgow, Research Associate at the University of Glasgow School of Computing Science, and Research Intern at prestigious institutions including the Allen Institute for AI (AI2), ISTI-CNR, Adobe, and Max Planck Institute for Informatics.

Prior to his academic pursuits, Sean MacAvaney worked as a software developer at IIT/SourceTech and held roles such as Graduate Teaching Assistant at Georgetown University, Graduate Research Assistant at Georgetown University, TRIO Tutor at Milwaukee School of Engineering, and Web Development Intern at IIT/SourceTech.
