I am 'good with computers', at least that's what I was always told! I've always been able to slot into any business or team and quickly get things moving. Whether as a developer, analyist or consultant. Over the last decade and a half i've done it all!
I specialise in PHP and Javascript as required. I have a repution as a 'fixer', always being able to propose/execute a solution to cover the rerquirement of any project. I enjoy getting my teeth into a new project and considering the most efficient ways to do things. I also enjoy tracing issues in systems and fixing/optimising them.
Having worked as a freelancer for most of my career I find myself filling every role as needed. On any day I can be sales, analysis, architecture, developer, tester, support and accountant. I've worked with a wide variety of industries and companies all over the world. I like to describe myself as a developer who can actually communicate with real people and this has served me well.
From a systems perpective I tend to prefer standalone frameworks but am not a big fan of reinventing the wheel so have experience in a number of off the shelf solutions which can be used depending on the project.
Notable projects of the last 5 years include:
- An AWS Lamba based survey system used for the polling industry (Node + React)
- A building survey platform used for distributing work to a network of surveyors (PHP)
- A conference/events platform allowing anyone to run a complex conference (PHP / CodeIngniter)
- A stock management system with ordering and reporting capabilites (PHP / React)
- A gaming stats site pulling data from Azure Playfab. (Currently bespoke PHP but moving to PHP / Laravel / React)
Historically, I worked on early PHP eCommerce platforms for my customers (OSCommerce / Zencart / Magento). On a daily basis I found myself knee deep in user submitted code and so learnt to troubleshoot very quickly. Something that has helped me greatly throughout my career.
I established my company, Tortoise IT, in 2012. It provides web based consultancy services, mainly development and analysis but I've worn many hats over my career and have both the skills and contacts for most use cases.
It's the work I enjoy most about this business and often say to my clients that I have yet to find a project to really challenge me. After a decade and a half this is largely still true!
