During our 'Hackathons for Good' participants from diverse companies and backgrounds solve the innovation challenge of a non-profit organisation in 4 design-thinking workshops.

Each team is accompanied by a coach to deliver actionable solutions and foster personal development. We like to call it learning better by doing good.

Staff from participating companies enjoy a rich learning experience, developing skills around empathy, creativity, collaboration, and pitching. They also support the non-profit organisation and contribute to projects with real-world positive impact.

For the participating non-profit organisation, the hackathon is an opportunity to accelerate its innovation and to raise awareness of its mission more broadly.

Since its launch in France at the end of 2018, Big Bloom has expanded globally, and accelerated 200+ social innovation projects across topics such as diversity & inclusion, education, and climate change, to name just a few.

In my role as a Lead Coach with Big Bloom, I coordinate and manage teams of coaches and designers to deliver a hackathon experience that brings together participants from corporate partners to work for the benefit of not-for-profit beneficiary organisations. I liaise closely with not-for-profit beneficiary organisations, supporting them to develop their challenge statement, engage participants for Empathy phase interviews, and bring together jury members to judge the prototype solutions pitched by participants. I host the hackathon, facilitate the jury deliberation process, and ensure that all participants in the hackathon have a positive experience.

The retreat at Embercombe is an integral and much-loved part of the On Purpose London experience. During the retreat the On Purpose Associates connect more deeply with themselves, with nature and with each other. Together as a cohort they explore topics such as leadership, purpose, meaning and community, and learn to support themselves and each other more fully.

The retreat consists of 4 days of pre-planned activities, some individual, many collective, designed to facilitate the individual and collective exploration. And amongst all the plans, we also allow the land and the cohort to co-create the content, and to co-facilitate the experience. Indeed, staying alive to what is and improvising, rather than rigidly adhering to what was planned, is one of the most fun parts of facilitating!

Communications Manager

Collaborate is a social business supporting better cross-sector relationships in services to the public. We are a ‘shared space’ specialising in creative thinking, changing culture and supporting innovative practice. We work with individuals, organisations and systems who want to collaborate to achieve better outcomes for citizens.

I was placed with Collaborate as part of the On Purpose Social Impact Leadership Development programme, and spent six months with them working on two main projects. Alongside these projects, I redesigned the Collaborate website and generally supported the business.

I led a six-month project helping to guide a partnership of four charities through a process of developing new more financially sustainable information, advice and guidance products. The project included designing and running two ideation workshops, focus groups and developing a financial model and business plan.

For the second project I worked supporting the comms team at Essex County Council as we co-created a festival of innovation for the council. This involved developing comms plans, a messaging matrix, and creating a website for the festival.

I was responsible for the planning and implementation of all social campaigns across all clients for Host, including: Air New Zealand, Bank of Western Australia, BT Financial, Campari Gruppo, The Coca-Cola Company, King Island Dairy, Patak's, Sydney Water Corporation, Tourism Western Australia, and Vodafone Hutchison Australia.

As Online Community Manager I was responsible for:

- Developing a brand-aligned editorial content strategy
- Creating and maintaining an editorial content plan
- Scheduling, writing and publishing short-form editorial content
- Developing a social media monitoring and reporting strategy
- Reporting on effectiveness of editorial content

The development of the social media monitoring and reporting strategy involved managing relationships with stakeholders across the business to develop custom social media measurement programs. The output of this monitoring program was the creation and delivery of custom social media insights to support key business objectives.

Moderation and community engagement were key aspects of my role. As the corporate voice of Optus in all social media channels, I had to regularly liaise with Corporate Affairs, Legal, Compliance and Investor Relations, as well as relevant business units, to ensure that the appropriate brand tone, language and information was used in all social communications.

As part of the founding team of this international sports advocacy and social networking start-up I had a number of key responsibilities.

I managed a team of developers to deliver back-end platforms, front-end designs and effective user experience on the brand website. I worked with user experience experts to optimise the website for community members.

I developed a content strategy to ensure steady flow of engaging content for the community. This included filming and editing video Interviews with sports governing body representatives, professional athletes and federal politicians. I also created short-form social media content to boost brand awareness.

I consulted on the appropriate technology platform for our website. Before we launched I researched the sports market in Australia to identify early community participants, and we then reached out to engage them as community members. As well as moderating community content, I developed tutorial resources and in-house social media guidelines.

As the inaugural online editor and deputy print editor for this established industry marketing magazine, I had a number of key responsibilities.

I worked with design and development teams on the original site build, which involved creating wireframes and information architecture guidelines. I worked with the Digital Manager to project manage the 12-week website design & build.

The largest part of my online role was developing an ongoing editorial strategy. To do this I created a blogger outreach strategy (20 bloggers) and managed a content calendar across all the contributors. I worked with an external agency to create and deliver weekly podcasts, and commissioned and created original video content for the site. I also produced 30 weekly enewsletters (35%-40% CTR).

As the online publication grew, my role increasingly also involved community management. I moderated comments, reached out to influential community members and promoted the site content through social networks.

For the print publication I commissioned, compiled & sub-edited 11 issues of the monthly glossy trade marketing magazine. In that time I also researched and wrote five extended features (3000-5000 words), conducted multiple phone and face-to-face interviews with leading industry practitioners and developed a commissioning strategy to integrate print & online editorial content. I also worked with our National Sales Rep to manage key advertiser relationships.

Alongside my MA I also taught in the Media and Communications department of the School of Arts, in the following subjects:

As a sessional tutor I was responsible for planning and running 3-4 two-hour tutorials per week in two Undergraduate subjects (Introduction to Media and Communications, Professional Writing) and two Postgraduate subjects (Principles of Publishing and Editing, Public Relations and Corporate Power). I set and marked around 400 assignments per semester, and developed e-learning initiatives to more deeply engage 1st-year students.

Outside of the Media and Communications department I was also an international postgraduate tutor. In this role I planned and ran a variety of full-day intensive teaching sessions, five days a week for six weeks. I coached postgraduate students on research methods and mentored them as they prepared and delivered a peer-reviewed conference paper.
