Did you know Daoism originally emanated from Naturalism?
A lot of people think that Daoism was created by these ancient sages who used mystical insight to understand things.
This is a sexy idea, but according to Andrew Nugent who spent 28 years studying with multiple masters in China - it's not really accurate.
Unlike other cultures, Ancient China didn't ascribe the phenomenon of the natural world to God(s).
Instead, they focused on acutely understanding the patterns of nature.
The continuous observation of the natural world culminated in an understanding of "the way of things" or laws of the universe.
Andrew founded the Association of Traditional Studies to bring this ancient wisdom from China to the West.
We sat down for an hour and he unpacked his journey and many common misconceptions about Daoism.
Here's 6 ideas that really stuck out to me:
- The Dao Te Ching is intended to be read over and over again as a catalyst for perspective shift.
Each time you read it, it will hit differently and help you see your existing reality in a new light.
-
The essence of the Dao is about living in harmony with the universe and recognizing our insignificance. To know the Dao is to understand its laws.
-
Chinese medicine evolved from treating war wounds and epidemics that were rampant, not mystical meditation.
The conditions forced people to understand things quickly out of necessity by paying attention to cause and effect.
- "The best ruler is the one whose name no one knows."
What a counterintuitive idea in our fame-obsessed culture.
-
The idea of "cleaning your tuning fork" to align with the Dao resonates deeply. The path isn’t not about adding more, but removing the crud that keeps you out of harmony with the universe.
-
Many ideas in Chinese medicine that seem bizarre like certain plants being more effective at different seasons are easily observable phenomenon in nature.
For example, a plant in full bloom or ready harvest at is more healing than when it is of season and not ripe.
Here's a clip of Andrew describing how aligning your life to the Dao works.
This resonates immensely with my experience.
