Investigating the mechanism behind double strand break repair by homologous recombination. 

•	Continued to learn new experimental techniques, for example x-ray crystallography and isothermal titration calorimetry and octet. 

•	Previous experience meant I was able to introduce a technique that improved our sample quality. The resulting work was published in late 2016. 

•	Presented my work as a Rising Star at the Erice School for Integrative Structural Biology in 2017 

•	Mentored a summer student for eight weeks, he gained an understanding into the work we do, developed an array of skills and we discussed how he can progress his career. He has been accepted for a competitive PhD program at Kings College London

•	Analysed quantitative and qualitative data, such as measuring protein binding affinities and assessing electron micrographs for sample quality

•	Developed skills in peer reviewing, management and R programming through courses provided at the Institute. I’m also learning Python3 through a Udemy course.

•	Understanding the bigger picture of DNA damage repair and its importance: my project involves looking at a small number of proteins involved in repairing breaks in DNA. In order to understand the significance of my work it was essential to understand how these proteins fit in with the bigger picture of the DNA damage repair process. 

•	Volunteered to act as a secretary for PhD interviews and with an Experimental Design Tutorial for incoming students.

The Francis Crick Institute

Postdoctoral Research Fellow

Investigated the role of post-translational modifications and chromatin remodelling in gene regulation using structural biology techniques.

•	As a starting point for my project I had to collect information on a wide range of techniques and evaluate which was the most appropriate for my experiments. The criteria for evaluation included what resources I had available, my skills and whether the resulting protein would be comparable to the protein produced and modified naturally in the cell 

•	Developed problem-solving and troubleshooting skills to ensure progress of different projects

•	I worked as a member of a team of five within our lab and a number of external collaborators. We each had our complimentary roles and by sharing information within the team, we were able to work together to ensure the project progressed. Some of the work from this project has been published and has recently been selected for a Focus on Australasia Special Edition of the Journal of Biological Chemistry. 

•	During my many visits to the Landsberg Lab at the University of Queensland, I developed strong working relationships with the members of the lab, establishing a collaboration that continues today. 

•	Worked on a number of different projects, maintained cell stocks for the lab and taught undergraduate practical classes. Balancing these tasks taught me to manage my time well, prioritise tasks and work to deadlines.

•	Read and critically analysed previously published work and produce a review of relevant literature for thesis introduction

•	Producing a thesis using Microsoft Word, Endnote and Adobe Illustrator

PhD Candidate

Supervised and directed undergraduate students in biochemistry and molecular biology laboratory classes.

•	Prepared and gave tutorial presentations to 15-20 students that outlined the tasks students were to perform that day and discussed the experimental outcomes. I was also given the opportunity to give the final tutorial to 150 students for one practical class. This involved developing an extensive understanding of the content and finding a suitable way to present it to the students.

•	As a senior tutor, part of the role involved organising junior tutors to ensure the smooth running of the practical, for example coordinating when we needed to prepare and test reagents that needed to be used, helping them learn the material and managing how the tutors worked together

•	Within our practical classes we often encountered students with varying experience and needs. In these situations, I had to be adaptable to ensure that each student received information and guidance appropriate to their needs but still understood the complex content that the class involved.

•	Providing Microsoft Excel tutorials and support for students
