After 30+ years in the workforce, I took a measured and strategic decision to take "a year for me". I knew I was not ready to retire, but with a world in pandemic flux and many years of family responsibilities, I chose to take 12 months to decide how I wanted to spend the next phase of my career. Unable to safely travel as we had originally intended, I used this time to learn new skills that had intrigued me; a new language, silversmithing, and Art Medal Sculpture - a passion brewing for 27 years. I highly recommend that at some point everyone takes some time for themselves, whether it be a week, a month, or a year. It has been eye-opening, reaffirming, and left me open and ready to tackle whatever comes next.

A Year for Me

Managed the internal (staff and volunteer) and external (donor and community) communications for 501(c)3 non-profit through web, email, print, and broadcast media. Achievements included:
•	Effective implementation of a controversial and previously unsuccessful rebranding.
.      UX specification and commissioning of new website.
•	Introduction of online donations, sales, and ticketing for therapeutic, fundraising, and training events.
•	Substantially increased organic reach across all social media platforms.
•	Working closely with the Event Manager, pivoted an in-person gala for 600 to an online event and live auction. Despite a very short implementation timeline, and at that time (May 2020) untested processes and platforms, doubled the expected revenue and maintained the quality of experience expected by our Trustees.

Clients ranged from technology new-starts to education consultants, artists, retail, sports, and services. Four feature-length pieces with photography were also published in the printed version of INK Magazine.

Responsible for Communications, Organizational Development, Strategic Direction, Contract Negotiation/Introducing New National Contracts, Interagency Communications, Primary Care Trust Development, Performance Management:

The post of Director of Primary Care reported to the Executive Director of Strategy and was created to oversee the successful implementation of new Primary Care Contracts for General Practitioners, Dentists, Pharmacists, and Ophthalmologists in the three counties (an area geographically and economically similar to the State of Connecticut).  I held accountability for the negotiation of new contracts with hundreds of individually owned practices through nine Primary Care Trusts; geographically organized local commissioning groups.  My responsibility also included the strategic development and emergency readiness of those Primary Care Trusts; working closely with Performance Managers in the directorate.  I also led the establishment of a multidisciplinary group of Medical Directors, Senior Consultants and Commissioning Leads in anticipation of, and to oversee the implementation of the 2005 National Service Framework for Long Term Conditions.

Strategic Audits, C-Suite Communications, Audit Design, Development & Roll-out (Primary Care HR Performance).  Major audit of the readiness of Strategic Health Authorities.  Development and Roll-out of Audit for Workforce Commissions:

In this dual role I carried out statutory and local performance studies on a range of health bodies, liaising with Executive and Non Executive Directors board members on a daily basis.  I was also Regional Service Director for Primary Care, advising the Commission on the potential performance implications of national policy.
−	Completed all studies on time and within budget
−	All studies accepted by the relevant Audit Committees
−	Major new study developed for the AC on Workforce Development Confederations, securing substantial income stream for the AC.

Principal Auditor (Primary Care, Strategic Planning, Communications & HR Specialties)

First organized as Bedfordshire Health Authority, then as Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire Strategic Health Authority. Successive reorganizations have left many of the functions with the Commissioning Group.

As an Executive Member of the Board, I held management and financial accountability for internal and external communications, stakeholder involvement, organizational development, human resources, consumer relations, nursing home registration, and primary care disciplinary committees.
−	Led the Authority’s Communication, Public Involvement, and Consultation Programmes, ensuring that all proposals considered by the Secretary of State for Health received support.
−	Led the Authority’s Communication Plan for Y2K (a major undertaking in the light of national concerns about how the NHS’s computer systems would behave at the turn of the century).
−	Implemented a major change-management program, gaining the support and confidence of the newly appointed Chief Executive and Chair, to facilitate the spin-off of three Primary Care Trusts and a Shared Services Agency.  Personally developed the internal and external communications plan and implemented it with local and national media through my team.
−	Led a successful de-registration of an unfit nursing homeowner whilst ensuring maximum support to the elderly and vulnerable residents and relatives and positive local and national media coverage.
−	Developed and implemented a multi-disciplinary strategy to overcome long-standing and entrenched positions of partner organisations in the reprovision of mental health services.

−	Implementation of new management information systems, training and operational procedures to ensure that complaints and direct consumer feedback were handled in an appropriate and positive manner by all staff whilst producing meaningful, directorate-focussed market research.
−	Responsibility as a member of Corporate Management Group and Clinical Policy Groups for the operational management of the Trust including business planning, contracting and service evaluation with a specific remit to formulate a strategy for the development of Administration staff across the Trust (approx. 11% of the workforce).
−	Company Secretary duties including advising the Board on matters of corporate governance and the establishment and maintenance of Trust Registers.

By November 1994 it was meeting its business-plan projections and employed 5 people.  I sold the company and moved to Sheffield following my marriage.

Produced corporate literature in-house and pre-flight for offset printing, running large promotional events, preparing and working with design house to publish the Annual Report, preparing bids to OJEC (Official Journal of the European Community) for major public civil engineering projects. I went on to establish a central Marketing Services Agency for the Brimms group of companies delivering on SLAs to individual companies in the group as well as identifying cross-marketing opportunities across the group.
