Atlanta Regional Commission developed a Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy for the 10 county Metro Atlanta region.  This strategy includes a vision of building on innovative attributes of the region to benefit the development of our entrepreneurial assets.  As chair of the Innovative Subcommittee, my efforts are to engage talent from the across the community to implement actions which will attract and nurture new startup enterprises, establish Metro Atlanta as a top 5 market for academic research, innovation and commercialization in the US, and to improve capital access and incentives for innovation at regional and state level.

The IndUS Entrepreneurs (TiE) is a global, not-for-profit organization created for the advancement of entrepreneurship. At TiE, Talent, ideas, Enterprise define the core values in building the Entrepreneurial Ecosystem. Entrepreneurs, Corporate Executives and senior professionals with roots or interest in the Indus region charter this organization. TiE membership is open to all with the explicit goal to benefit entrepreneurs.

COBA, a TiE Atlanta Program is a not-for-profit organization that helps to build businesses by providing senior level strategic advisory services to an elite group of small to mid-market, high growth potential companies that do not currently have formal boards.  COBA will enable these profitable, high-potential companies to transition to the next level by providing board level advisory services.  COBA is the first of its kind, setting the stage for corporate governance.

In addition to supporting the chair in fulfilling the mission of COBA, responsibilities of the co-chair include executing program, matching qualified companies to appropriate board advisors, and creating a foundation for governance.

The Arthritis Foundation is the largest national nonprofit organization solely dedicated to the prevention, control and cure of arthritis, the leading cause of disability in the United States. Founded in 1948, with headquarters in Atlanta, the Arthritis Foundation has multiple service points located throughout the country. The Arthritis Foundation is the largest private, not-for-profit contributor to arthritis research in the world, funding more than $380 million in research grants since 1948. The foundation helps people take control of arthritis by providing public health education; pursuing public policy and legislation; and conducting evidence-based programs to improve the quality of life for those living with arthritis.

The IT Advisory Group is chartered by the Board of Directors to serve as advisor to the VP IT on the IT strategic plan, current trends in IT, funding mechanisms and use of IT systems within the Foundation.  Appointed on an annual basis, members suggest ways technology can impact mission delivery.

The Georgia CIO Leadership Association (GCLA) is the preeminent professional organization for Georgia’s information technology leaders. Founded in 2003, its membership is comprised exclusively of chief information officers or individuals in equivalent positions at companies and organizations throughout the state. The GCLA is a nonprofit, noncommercial organization led by an Advisory Board of Georgia CIOs, from prominent organizations including: NCR, GE, Southern Company, and Georgia Pacific.  

The GCLA exists to provide a forum to share ideas, best practices and experiences relevant to CIOs. It is committed to creating opportunities for Georgia CIOs to engage in substantive, issues-based discussion related to their industries and profession. The organization promotes industry growth and professional development by hosting luncheons, round tables and executive events that facilitate valuable interaction among senior-level experts.

As President of Women in Technology (WIT Inc.), I participated on the Board of TAG. WIT was one of the TAG founding societies in 1998 and continues to partner with TAG. TAG is a leading technology industry association dedicated to the promotion and economic advancement of the state's technology industry. TAG provides leadership in driving initiatives in the areas of policy, capital, education and giving, and also brings the technology community together through events, initiative programs and networking opportunities.

Initially sponsored by TAG's Women in Technology (WIT), BiblioBabes was conceived and launched while I was serving as a member of the WIT Board of Directors.  The book club grew out of my love of reading and a desire to bring women together to share experiences.  Knowing that professional women often struggle to find time to read (or focus on their own growth), it was important to make BiblioBabes easy to participate with.  Participants do not have to be members of WIT or TAG and the meetings are open to all women. Atypical of other book clubs, attendees are not required to read the book!  A discussion leader ensures that the book concepts and learnings are communicated.  Selections focus on business books of relevance to professional women. Meetings are held 3 to 5:30 PM the third Sunday of each month and typically start with networking and refreshments followed by discussion.

My involvement with WIT began in 2003 as a nominee for the Woman of the Year in Technology.  Coming late to the importance of being involved in supporting women, I recognize the value and the opportunity of serving this remarkable and energized organization.

 WIT develops and promotes women for success in technology in Georgia.  The top technology women in Georgia utilize WIT's programs and connections to develop their leadership skills and increase their visibility in the business community.

My AAA affiliation began with serving on the AAA Auto Club South Board of Directors and at the conclusion of my term there, I joined the Georgia Advisory Board.  

Tampa-based AAA Auto Club South and Dearborn, Michigan-based, The Auto Club Group, have affiliated and combined operations effective October 1, 2011 to become the second largest AAA club in North America. The enterprise will be known as The Auto Club Group and serve members, insureds, and other customers across 11 states and two U.S. territories, including Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Michigan, Nebraska, North Dakota, Wisconsin, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands; most of Illinois, Minnesota and Tennessee; and a portion of Indiana.

The combined organization will provide membership, travel, insurance, and financial services offerings to more than 8.4 million members through a network of nearly 8,000 employees in approximately 300 office locations. The enterprise will maintain corporate headquarters in both Dearborn and Tampa. Robert R. Sharp, who chaired the former Auto Club South board, will be Chairman of the Board of The Auto Club Group. Charles H. Podowski continues as Chief Executive Officer, and John A. Tomlin, former Auto Club South CEO, is Chief Operating Officer.

As a large property and casualty insurer and one of the largest auto insurance companies in Michigan, The Auto Club Group could provide customers in the former Auto Club South region with broader access to more insurance products and services. Likewise, the former Auto Club South’s expertise in travel and the numerous cruise ports in Florida could give Midwest AAA members and consumers more direct access to unique cruise and tour experiences at competitive prices. 

The Auto Club Group belongs to the national AAA federation with nearly 53 million members in the United States and Canada whose mission includes protecting and advancing freedom of mobility and improving travel safety.

I had the great opportunity to provide mentorship to ATDC member companies.  My role was unique in providing insights into how early stage companies can approach technology buyers and in connecting members of the CIO community to these exceptional companies.  

The Advanced Technology Development Center (ATDC) is a nationally recognized science and technology incubator headquartered at Georgia Tech and is home to more than 20 of Georgia's most promising emerging growth companies.

Engaging first as a Host for the 2004 Digital Ball, my involvement with TechBridge has continued to grow and I am a passionate and committed supporter for their mission.  TechBridge is an Atlanta-based nonprofit with one mission – to help other nonprofits use technology to do more and serve more people. We focus on technology enabling nonprofits to focus on their mission.

TechBridge has provided IT consulting, hosting and outsourcing services to hundreds of nonprofits, helping them harness the productivity gains long since enjoyed by the corporate sector, by connecting the needs of nonprofits with the skills and financial resources of the technology community. The Digital Ball, TechBridge’s signature fundraising gala, brings together Atlanta’s technology community to celebrate the impact technology can have in strengthening our community.
