    Samra Brouk is an American politician serving as a New York State Senator for the 55th district, which encompasses parts of Monroe County, including Rochester and its eastern suburbs. A member of the Democratic Party, she has held this position since January 2021, after winning the general election in November 2020. Brouk made history as the first Black woman from Upstate New York and the first Black person from the Greater Rochester Area to be elected to the New York State Senate.2

    Early Life and Education

    Born on May 20, 1986, in Rochester, New York, Brouk is the daughter of Ethiopian immigrants. She was raised in the suburbs of Monroe County and graduated from Williams College. Brouk also served in the Peace Corps as a health educator in Guatemala before embarking on her political career.2

    Political Career

    Brouk's political journey began with her campaign for the 55th district, which was initially contested against Republican incumbent Rich Funke. However, Funke chose not to run for re-election, allowing Brouk to win the Democratic primary unopposed. In the general election, she secured 57% of the vote against Republican Christopher Missick.12

    In the Senate, Brouk has taken on significant roles, including Chair of the Mental Health Committee. She is also a member of several other committees, such as Aging, Alcoholism and Substance Abuse, Education, Elections, and Health. Her legislative focus includes improving access to mental health resources and addressing issues related to education, substance misuse, and healthcare.24

    Personal Life

    Samra Brouk resides in Rochester with her husband, Brian, and their daughter. Her background in non-profit work has been centered on environmental protection, senior support, and education equity.23
