Sam McVeety
Area Tech Lead / Distinguished Engineer at Google
Sam McVeety is the Area Tech Lead for Cloud Data Analytics at Google, where he works with thousands of engineers.1 He is a Distinguished Engineer at Google, a position he has held since October 2021.1 Before that, he was a Principal Engineer at Google from 2018 to 2021, and a Senior Staff Engineer from 2009 to 2018.1 McVeety also worked as a Speech & Language Consultant and Intern at BBN Technologies in 2006 and 2007.1
McVeety received a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics (2004-2008) and a Master of Engineering in Computer Science (2008-2009) from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).1 He is also a graduate of the Out in Front and Leadership Tomorrow programs, earning those certifications in June 2013 and June 2018, respectively.1
McVeety has co-authored publications such as "BigLake: BigQuery’s Evolution toward a Multi-Cloud Lakehouse," "The Dataflow Model: A Practical Approach to Balancing Correctness, Latency, and Cost in Massive-Scale, Unbounded, Out-of-Order Data Processing," and "MillWheel: Fault-Tolerant Stream Processing at Internet Scale".3 He also writes "Decompiling Oppression".1
McVeety is involved in promoting equity and inclusion within and outside of Google.1 He moved to Washington 15 years ago and is invested in infrastructure and people.2
