Sage Brice
Artist-Geographer; British Academy Postdoctoral Fellow at Durham University
Sage Brice is a British Academy Postdoctoral Fellow and Assistant Professor in Human Geography at Durham University. Her academic work focuses on cultural geography, particularly the intersection of environmental geographies with social differences, and she has developed the concept of "Trans Ecologies" to explore these themes.
Brice's research interests include the politics of nature, queer and trans ecologies, and the role of identity in environmental contexts. Her doctoral research, conducted at the University of Bristol, investigated identity and ecology in the Huleh wetlands of Israel-Palestine. Currently, her postdoctoral fellowship examines how everyday practices of gender during the COVID-19 pandemic reflect broader social questions about identity and subjectivity, employing creative and collaborative methods with trans and nonbinary individuals to produce graphic narratives.134
In addition to her research, Brice is also an accomplished artist, engaging in contemporary art practices that include drawing and sculpture. She has exhibited her work at various venues, such as the Royal West of England Academy and Pratt Manhattan Gallery.14 Her teaching experience includes supervising undergraduate dissertations and delivering innovative courses on qualitative research methods and creative practices in geography.12
