Ronald A. Marks III is a prominent figure in the field of national security, with over 40 years of experience in the U.S. national security community. He is a Life Member of the Council on Foreign Relations and currently serves as a nonresident senior fellow at the Atlantic Council's Scowcroft Center for Strategy and Security. Additionally, he is the president of ZPN National Security and Cyber Strategies, where he provides advisory services on national security issues to both public and private sectors.
Marks has a significant background in intelligence, having served as a clandestine service officer with the CIA, where he held various senior positions, including Senate liaison for five directors of central intelligence. He also worked as intelligence counsel for former Senate Majority Leaders Bob Dole and Trent Lott. After leaving government service, he has been involved in academia, teaching courses on cyber and intelligence at institutions such as George Mason University and Johns Hopkins University.
He is the author of the book Spying in America in the Post 9/11 World: Domestic Threat and the Need for Change, which discusses the expansion of intelligence collection in the U.S. and the need for oversight in this area.
