Ron Gula is a prominent figure in the cybersecurity industry, currently serving as the President and Co-Founder of Gula Tech Adventures (GTA), a venture that focuses on investing in and advising cybersecurity startups while also promoting cyber policy and workforce development. Since its inception in 2017, GTA has invested in numerous cybersecurity companies and supported various nonprofit initiatives aimed at enhancing cybersecurity practices and education.123
Early Career and Achievements
Ron began his career in cybersecurity as a network penetration tester for the National Security Agency (NSA). He later worked at BBN Technologies, where he developed network honeypots to attract hackers. His entrepreneurial journey took off when he co-founded Network Security Wizards, where he created the Dragon Intrusion Detection System, one of the first commercial network intrusion detection systems, recognized as a market leader by Gartner in 2001.13
From 2002 to 2016, Ron served as the co-founder and CEO of Tenable Network Security, where he played a crucial role in scaling the company to over 20,000 customers and raising $300 million in venture capital. Under his leadership, Tenable achieved more than $100 million in annual revenue and successfully went public in 2018, with a valuation of approximately $3 billion.256
Contributions and Recognition
In addition to his roles at GTA and Tenable, Ron has been actively involved with various cybersecurity nonprofits and think tanks, including the Center for Internet Security and the National Security Institute. His contributions to the field have been recognized through several awards, including the 2020 Cyber Investor of the Year from the Northern Virginia Technology Council and induction into the Cybersecurity Hall of Fame in 2023.47
