    Rolando Cruz Perez is a bioengineer, educator, and community advocate who was formerly a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Bioengineering at Stanford University. A native of Salinas, California, he focuses on developing technologies that promote equity, sustainability, and community empowerment. His work integrates culturally relevant pedagogy to decolonize STEM education and dismantle systemic barriers such as the school-to-prison pipeline.12

    Rolando holds multiple academic degrees: an Associate of Science in Physics and Mathematics (magna cum laude) from Hartnell Community College, a Bachelor of Science in Biomolecular Engineering with a minor in Bioinformatics (cum laude) from UC Santa Cruz, and a Master of Science in Bioengineering from Stanford University. His research spans biotechnology, nanotechnology, metamaterials, and computer-aided drug discovery. Currently, he is developing tools for mycelium-based bioproduction to create sustainable materials like textiles and pharmaceuticals from waste streams.1

    In addition to his academic achievements, Rolando co-founded BioJam, a community-centered summer camp that combines biodesign, art, and activism to engage youth in underrepresented communities. He also co-founded Xinampa, a community action space aimed at fostering grassroots innovation. Rolando has published peer-reviewed articles, received numerous research awards, and frequently speaks on topics such as STEM outreach and education.12
