    Robert Sumwalt

    Chairman at National Transportation Safety Board

    Robert L. Sumwalt is the 14th chairman of the NTSB, having been sworn in on August 10, 2017, after a nomination by President Donald J. Trump and confirmation by the U.S. Senate.

    Prior to becoming Chairman, he served as acting chairman for 5 months and began his tenure at the NTSB in August 2006 as Vice Chairman when appointed by President George W. Bush.

    Robert Sumwalt is a staunch advocate for enhancing safety across various transportation modes and has spearheaded initiatives on teen driver safety, impaired driving, distractions in transportation, as well as aviation and rail safety.

    With a robust aviation background, he was a pilot for 32 years, logging over 14,000 flight hours, primarily with Piedmont Airlines and US Airways. He also held roles in flight safety and served on the Flight Operational Quality Assurance (FOQA) team at US Airways.

    Post his aviation career, he oversaw the corporate aviation department for a Fortune 500 energy company and chaired the Air Line Pilots Association's Human Factors and Training Group.

    Furthermore, Sumwalt co-founded the association's critical incident response program and consulted for eight years with NASA's Aviation Safety Reporting System (ASRS). He has extensively contributed to aviation safety literature.

    Robert Sumwalt obtained his Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration from the University of South Carolina and a Master of Aeronautical Science (with Distinction) from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, specializing in aviation/aerospace safety systems and human factors aviation systems. He holds honorary Doctor of Science degrees from the University of South Carolina and Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.

    He is enshrined in the South Carolina Aviation Hall of Fame for his remarkable contributions to aviation safety. Additionally, he has undergone specialized studies in aviation safety at the University of Southern California.
