Robert McDonald
Lead Scientist at The Nature Conservancy
Dr. Robert McDonald is the Lead Scientist for Nature-Based Solutions at The Nature Conservancy and also serves as Lead Scientist for the Europe region.23 He is an ecologist and urbanist who studies how cities depend on and impact the natural world.1
Dr. McDonald holds a Ph.D. in Ecology from Duke University and has published over 110 scientific publications and two books.21 His research focuses on the impact and dependencies of communities on the natural world, examining how nature can increase resilience to climate change and improve human health and well-being.3
Prior to his current role, which he has held since June 2020, Dr. McDonald served as:
- Lead Scientist for Cities at The Nature Conservancy (2016-2020)
- Senior Scientist for Sustainable Land-Use at The Nature Conservancy (2008-2016)
- David H. Smith Conservation Biology Fellow at Harvard Graduate School of Design (2006-2008)
- Postdoctoral Fellow at Harvard University (2004-2006)1
Dr. McDonald has been instrumental in developing The Nature Conservancy's urban conservation initiatives, which now have active projects in more than 25 cities worldwide.1 He is based in the Basel Metropolitan Area and provides scientific support and strategic advice to The Nature Conservancy's Nature-Based Solutions projects globally.12
