Throughout most of history, Pride was something society looked down upon. Superbia (Pride) was the deadliest of the Seven Deadly Sins. Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Hinduism, and Buddhism tie Pride to humanity’s downfall.

Ok, but that is all dogmatic religious fundamentalism you say? What about the revered great civilizations? Ancient Greece viewed Hubris (Pride) as a fatal flaw, and the Romans considered Pride to be irrational and dangerous. For the Ancients, Pride was acceptable only when a virtuous person was worthy of it and expressed with grace and restraint

The word Pride stems from the Old English ‘prȳde’, meaning ‘excessive self-esteem’. Only in recent centuries has Pride come to mean something positive. Enlightenment philosophers reframed it as a rejection of humility in the context of forced servility, eg monarchies/ religion/ feudalism.

And yet Enlightenment thinkers were still careful to make the distinction between positive/legitimate pride (self-respect and moral worth) and negative/illegitimate pride (arrogance or elevation above moral law). Pride in comparison to others was always illegitimate.

Today, Pride is used largely in a one-sided positive sense to mean self-worth, regardless of morality eg ‘bursting with Pride’. People take pride in belonging to a nation (a marked area on a map) or in being part of a marginalized community, such as the giant Pride Parade I stumbled upon today in London.

Ironically, even the most liberal Enlightenment thinkers warned against this. It is weird to be ‘Proud’ of being part of a community, regardless of whether the collective people act virtuously or not.

A group identity can not make someone virtuous. Being marginalized does not necessarily make the victim of the marginalization virtuous either.

There are plenty of virtues that should be admirable to groups, especially marginalized groups, eg justice/ fairness/ equality. But in choosing to celebrate virtue(s), it pressures the group to demonstrably act that way. It is much easier and cheaper to celebrate a hollow and vague sense of Pride
