Richard Carleton
CEO at CNSX Markets Inc.
Richard W. Carleton is the CEO of the Canadian Securities Exchange (CSE), appointed to this position in July 2011.12 He has a background in law and extensive experience in the financial services industry. Carleton holds a B.A. in History from the University of Ottawa (1981) and an LL.B. from the University of Toronto (1985).14 He has been a member of the Law Society of Ontario since 1987.2
Prior to joining the CSE, Carleton's career included:
- Twelve years at the Toronto Stock Exchange, where he was part of the senior management team responsible for market data, index services, and strategic direction.3
- Five years as a business development consultant in Toronto and New York.3
- Various roles at CNSX Markets Inc., including VP and interim CEO, before becoming the permanent CEO.4
Under Carleton's leadership, the CSE has experienced significant growth, setting records for new listings, capital raised by issuers, and trading turnover.1 He has been recognized as one of Canada's "25 Cannabis Industry Power Players" by the Financial Post Magazine and received the American Trade Association for Cannabis and Hemp's "Captain of Industry" Award in 2018.2
Carleton is known for his advocacy of entrepreneurial companies and efforts to streamline regulation while maintaining customer service.2 He frequently speaks on early-stage company finance issues globally and serves on the boards of several organizations, including the Empire Club of Canada and the Private Capital Markets Association.2
