René Cormier

René Cormier is a prominent Canadian Acadian artist, activist, and politician from New Brunswick. He was appointed to the Senate of Canada on November 15, 2016, as an independent senator.13
Born on April 27, 1956, Cormier has had an extensive career in arts and culture spanning nearly 40 years.13 He is a multidisciplinary artist with experience as a director, actor, musician, composer, cultural manager, and announcer.1 Cormier received his education in music at l'Université du Québec à Montréal and in theatre at l'École internationale Jacques LeCoq in Paris.12
Some of his notable roles and achievements include:
- Artistic Director of the biennial Zones Théâtrales at the National Arts Centre of Canada since 2010.24
- President of the Société Nationale de l'Acadie (SNA) from June 2015 until his Senate appointment.1
- Artistic and general director at the Théâtre populaire d'Acadie from 1993 to 2005.2
- Artistic director for the 2009 Congrès mondial acadien.1
- Chair of various national and international organizations, including the Commission internationale du théâtre francophone (CITF) and the Fédération culturelle canadienne-française (FCCF).1
Cormier is known for his integrity, professionalism, and ability to bring people together. He has received numerous recognitions, including an honorary doctorate from the Université de Moncton (2018), the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres de France (2003), and the Éloize award for theatre artist of the year (2000).1
As a senator, Cormier has shown a strong commitment to international diplomacy and is involved in various parliamentary associations.1 He is openly gay and has spearheaded the creation of the Canadian Pride Caucus, a non-partisan committee of Canada's LGBTQ MPs and senators.3
