🧐The Secret Lives of Retirees: 🧐 What I’ve learned in 7 months! Since the Industrial Revolution, we have F’d up the role of work in our lives. What if we switched from this insane drive to Return to Office (RTO) to a Return to Nature (RTN)? And by nature, I mean our natural state, not our adapted state of industrialized office hours. Over the last seven months, I’ve been traveling around the U.S. in my RV, living like a retiree, but I’m still working, albeit not as much as I used to. My RV neighbors are all retired and probably one to two decades older than me. Observing my future potential self has me rethinking my work life, future “retired” life, and how my next career chapter will look.

Business Reflections from a 20,000 mile Roadtrip: I'm finishing a 20,000 road trip around the U.S. and reflecting on the past 5 years (30 years total) of business experiences and how they have affected my life. Out of that, I'm coming to some realizations that I hope will help you in your journey.

    1. The true measure of wealth is good health, good friends, a loving family, and a community. After that, it is the freedom to work when and from where you want. And yes, I hear you retired people say that NOT working is better. Meh, I beg to differ. If you are not contributing to society, that's fine, but it's not a measure of wealth to me.

    2. Time and Geographic Freedom now rank higher to me than financial success. Financial freedom is not about money; it is about time, which is actually our scarcest resource. Wealth provides choice; wealth buys time. If you spend all your time achieving wealth, all you have is a good inheritance for the next generation to enjoy after you die. Take some of that wealth and enjoy the time you have left.

    3. Slow down to Speed Up. Big business, career, or personal life pivots don't happen instantly. Sometimes, you must take a significant break from your daily routine to see the big picture from a new perspective. Rushing the process delays and dilutes the efficacy of the intended outcome.

    4. Sitting still is just as Potent as Moving Fast. In the stillness of nature, breath, or thought, there is a universe of possibility and the steel thread of action. The tech bro culture of moving fast, breaking things, failing fast, agile iteration, and blah, blah, blah is fine, but it is not the answer to every business problem.

    5. Even a Shitty Move is better than No Move. Back to #4, it is wise to take a breath, get perspective, be still and wait. However, sometimes your only move is a shitty move. The move does not deliver the promise land. It wreaks of bad consequences ahead. The move could be your ultimate demise. And sometimes, it gets you through a bad spot, you survive another day, and you buy time to find a better path ahead.
