Rafael Monge: Environmental Leader and Harvard Kennedy School Fellow

Rafael Monge is an economist and environmental leader from Costa Rica who is currently pursuing an MC/MPA degree as a Mason Fellow at the Harvard Kennedy School. He has extensive experience in various fields related to environmental information and policy.

Professional Experience

Director, National Center of Geoenvironmental Information (CENIGA), Ministry of Environment and Energy (MINAE), Costa Rica (Dec 2017 - Jul 2023)
- Managed the National System of Environmental Information (SINIA)
- Led the development of the National Land Use, Land Cover and Ecosystems Monitoring System (SIMOCUTE)
- Represented Costa Rica in the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change negotiations that led to the Paris Agreement
- Served as Costa Rica's representative to the Group on Earth Observations (GEO)
- Represented Latin America in the development of the 7th Global Environment Outlook (GEO 7) report by UN Environment
