Philein Wang is an award-winning Chinese-American choreographer, poet, and the Artistic Director/Founder of ZiRu Dance, a non-profit dance company based in Redwood City, California.13 Born in Michigan to Taiwanese and Chinese parents, Wang later grew up in Oakland, California, where her experiences with racism influenced her artistic vision.3
Wang founded ZiRu Dance in 2007 with a mission to promote cross-cultural collaboration and understanding, particularly between the US and China.24 Her choreographic style is a unique fusion of modern dance, ballet, Chinese martial arts (wushu), Tai Chi, and hip hop, reflecting her exploration of Chinese-American identity.3
Under Wang's leadership, ZiRu Dance has achieved significant success:
- Produced 28 tours in 16 Chinese cities
- Created 25 new works and commissioned 18 others
- Facilitated 8 individual dancer exchanges
- Sponsored over 50 dance education and outreach events in both the US and China2
Wang's work has garnered critical acclaim and support from various organizations, including the US State Department and the US Embassy in Beijing.23 In 2016, she was honored at the first San Mateo County Asian and Pacific Islander Heroes Reception for her leadership and advocacy.3
ZiRu Dance, under Wang's direction, emphasizes diversity, equity, and inclusion, with 98% of company members being individuals of color (Black, Asian American, and Latino).2 The company reaches an average of 5,000 unique people annually through its performances, festivals, and community engagement programs.5
