The story of the picture on my desk occasionally visible on some video calls.
"My arrow, be certain, will spare no one. All of you will dance this ballet to my tune."
This image is a powerful example of the Danse Macabre (the Dance of Death), a major artistic and literary theme in the late Middle Ages. The message is a memento mori, a reminder of the inevitability of death.
* The Skeleton: The central figure is the personification of Death. He is not depicted as a passive reaper but as an active, almost gleeful master of ceremonies.
* The Crossbow: This weapon symbolizes that death is inescapable, swift, and can strike anyone from anywhere at any time. It's a powerful and indiscriminate weapon.
* The Hourglass: At Death's feet is an hourglass, a classic symbol of mortality. It represents the finite nature of human life—once the sand runs out, your time is up.
* The "Ballet": The "ballet" or dance that Death leads is life's final act. The core idea of the Danse Macabre is that death is the great equalizer. It comes for everyone regardless of their station in life—popes, emperors, peasants, and children alike are all forced to join his dance. The text is a direct address from Death to the viewer, serving as a universal summons.
The piece is a stark and direct warning: No matter who you are, your time on Earth is limited, and you cannot escape death.
