Peter Tango
Chesapeake Bay Watershed Monitoring Coordinator at USGS
Peter Tango, Ph.D., is the Chesapeake Bay Monitoring Coordinator at the USGS MD-DE-DC Water Science Center.1 He has held this position since 2007, coordinating various aspects of the Chesapeake Bay Program's scientific and technical assessment efforts.1
Dr. Tango's educational background includes:
- Ph.D. in Fisheries Science from the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry (1999)
- M.S. in Wildlife Management from West Virginia University (1986)
- B.S. in Forest Biology, Magna Cum Laude, from the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry (1984)1
Throughout his career, Dr. Tango has been involved in various roles related to environmental monitoring and research:
- Chair of the Chesapeake Bay Program STAC Workshop on Advanced Water Quality Monitoring (2021-22)
- Coordinator for the Chesapeake Bay Program Scientific, Technical Assessment and Reporting Team (2010-present)
- Chair of the Chesapeake Bay Program Criteria Assessment Protocols Workgroup (2007-present)

Dr. Tango's work focuses on monitoring and assessing water quality in the Chesapeake Bay, including efforts to develop advanced monitoring approaches and improve assessment protocols.2 He is also involved in mentoring Ph.D. students and serving on advisory boards for environmental research programs.1
His passion for science and environmental conservation began in his youth, inspired by a 5th-grade teacher who encouraged him to start a birding life list in 1976.1 This early interest in nature has continued throughout his career, supporting his current role in monitoring and protecting the Chesapeake Bay ecosystem.3
