Peter Openshaw
Senior Consul at Imperial College London
Dr. Peter Openshaw is a distinguished respiratory physician, pulmonologist, and immunologist specialized in viral infections of the lung. He founded the Department of Respiratory Medicine at St Mary's in 1988, which later integrated into Imperial College during the 1990s.
His extensive research concentrates on the immunopathogenesis of infections, encompassing cell biology, animal experiments, and the study of human diseases, including volunteer challenge trials with RSV and influenza viruses. Dr. Openshaw leads the respiratory section of Imperial's Biomedical Research Centre, overseeing NIHR-funded respiratory medicine research at Imperial NHS Trust establishments.
In his role as the Director of the Center for Respiratory Infection, Dr. Openshaw supervises over 20 principal investigators. He has contributed to various committees such as the Academy of Medical Sciences, Wellcome Trust, Department of Health, and serves as the vice-chair of the European Scientific Working Group on Influenza (ESWI), focusing on aligning European influenza policies. His leadership was acknowledged when he was elected as the President of the British Society for Immunology in 2014.
Dr. Openshaw pursued his education diligently, completing his A levels at Bootham School in York, his O levels and O level subjects at Sidcot School in Somerset, and obtaining his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) degree from Guy's Hospital, University of London.
Currently holding the position of Senior Consul and having previously served as a Professor of Experimental Medicine at Imperial College London, Dr. Openshaw's profound expertise and involvement in various prestigious organizations make him a significant figure in the field of respiratory and immunological research.
