Peter Matthews
Economist, sort of.
Peter Hans Matthews is the Charles A. Dana Professor of Economics at Middlebury College and a Distinguished Visiting Professor at Aalto University in Helsinki, Finland.57 He joined Middlebury College in 1995 after completing his Ph.D. at Yale University.4 Matthews is an experimental economist whose research focuses on inequality, political economy, polarization, and social preferences.1
Matthews teaches courses in macroeconomics, poverty and inequality, labor economics, and game theory.6 He has been appointed as a Fulbright Scholar Alumni Ambassador, serving from 2021 to 2023.1 In 2017-2018, he held the position of Fulbright-Hanken Distinguished Chair in Economics and Business at the Hanken School of Economics in Finland.12
Born and raised in Montreal, Quebec, Matthews received his BA from McGill University and MA from Queen's University at Kingston, Ontario, before pursuing his Ph.D. at Yale.6 He is married to Carolyn Craven, a development economist and award-winning children's book author.36
Matthews' current research involves a project funded by a 480,000 euro grant from the Academy of Finland, focusing on the effects of various inequalities on individual welfare, social and political preferences, education, occupation, and location decisions.1
