Peter Empson

Peter Empson is a highly skilled Principal Engineer with a Bachelor of Science in Microelectronics and Information Processing from the University of Brighton.

With 10 years of experience in the STB/IPTV/OTT industry, Peter specializes in STB architecture/software and video infrastructure, focusing on embedded software environments, video head-end architecture, and design, as well as streaming and related technologies.

He has a track record of working with Broadcom-based STBs, leading off-shore software teams, and collaborating within the CTO Office on technology evaluations like streaming, broadcast playout, DRM, ACR, and advanced advertising.

His expertise spans C/C++, digital video and audio protocols, video encoding tools like Envivio 4Caster/Muse/4Manager and Harmonic ProMedia Carbon, DRM technologies such as Widevine and PlayReady, Broadcom SoC processors, Linux/Embedded Linux, IPTV/DVB/ATSC/SCTE/HDMI standards, HLS/MS Smooth Streaming, MPEG/H264/WM9/ASF codecs, HTML/JavaScript/CSS/HTML5 video, and broadcast workflows.

Peter also has experience with automatic content recognition tools like Civolution and Audible Magic SDK, broadcast playout systems like Grass Valley K2-Edge servers/TX/MAM and Cobalt/Director, as well as satellite/terrestrial TV acquisition technologies.

His skills extend to wired and wireless Ethernet/LAN, real-time software development, Java/JVM technology, Qt, WebKit browser, as well as version control systems like Trac/Subversion and project management tools like Jira/Agile.

He has designed and implemented an IPTV video head-end with Google-Widevine DRM and a broadcast channel workflow including asset and metadata ingest, MAM, QC, transcode, and playout.
