Paul Holthus is the Founding President and CEO of the World Ocean Council (WOC), which serves as the Global Blue Economy Business and Investment Organization. Established to unite various ocean industries, the WOC focuses on sustainable development and corporate ocean responsibility, addressing shared marine environmental issues across sectors such as shipping, fisheries, aquaculture, and offshore renewables.13
Background and Experience
Holthus has over 30 years of experience in marine conservation and sustainable development. He has held senior positions with organizations like UN Environment and has worked in more than 30 countries, collaborating with companies, communities, and governments to implement practical solutions for ocean sustainability.14 His educational background includes advanced degrees in marine resources and international business from the University of California and the University of Hawaii. He is also a Fulbright scholar and an alum of the East-West Center.35
Contributions to Ocean Sustainability
Under Holthus's leadership, the WOC has developed initiatives such as the Ocean Investment Platform, which connects investors with ocean industries and innovators. The organization hosts the annual Sustainable Ocean Summit, a key event for discussing corporate responsibility regarding ocean health.15 Holthus is recognized as a global leader in ocean sustainability, frequently speaking at international forums, including the UN General Assembly.23
Future Plans
As of October 2024, it has been announced that Holthus will step down from his role at the end of the year after 15 years of leadership at the WOC.67
