Patrick Masson

Patrick Masson is the Executive Director of the Apereo Foundation, a global community that develops and implements open source software for advancing teaching, learning, and research.12 He was appointed to this position in January 2023, after serving as the Interim General Manager since 2021.12

Prior to joining Apereo, Masson had an extensive career in higher education and non-profit organizations spanning over 25 years.2 His previous roles include:

• General Manager and Board Director at the Open Source Initiative (2013-2020)2
• CTO at the University of Massachusetts, Office of the President2
• CIO at the State University of New York2
• Director of Technology at the SUNY Learning Network and UCLA Media Lab3

Masson's expertise lies in developing and managing distributed organizations focused on education and open source initiatives. He is known for facilitating collaborative communities of practice that foster innovation through incremental and iterative approaches.2

As Executive Director of Apereo, Masson's responsibilities include:

• Overseeing strategic initiatives
• Cultivating community engagement
• Ensuring effective stewardship of the foundation's resources
• Supporting multiple communities of practice, including open source software projects, academic institutions, and edtech companies2

Masson is also an adjunct instructor at SUNY Albany's College of Computing and Information and frequently speaks on topics related to open source software, open education, and educational technology.3 He co-founded EDUCAUSE's "Openness" Constituency Group and served on his local school board from 2014-2018.3

His leadership at Apereo aims to foster, develop, and sustain open technologies and innovation in support of learning, teaching, and research.2
