Patrick Conway
CEO of Optum Rx, Healthcare Executive
Dr. Patrick Conway is the Chief Executive Officer of Optum Rx, a position he assumed in August 2023. He has been with Optum since February 2020, initially serving as the CEO of Care Solutions. In his current role, Conway leads an integrated pharmacy care services organization that processes over 1.5 billion prescriptions annually and serves more than 60 million people, generating more than $110 billion in revenue each year.123
Conway's extensive background includes significant leadership roles in healthcare. Prior to joining Optum, he was the president and CEO of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina from 2017 to 2019. He also held various senior positions at the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), including Deputy Administrator for Innovation and Quality, and Chief Medical Officer, where he was instrumental in developing value-based care models.125
He is a practicing pediatric hospitalist and has received numerous accolades, including election to the National Academy of Medicine in 2014. Conway earned his M.D. with high honors from Baylor College of Medicine and completed his residency at Boston Children's Hospital. He also holds a Master of Science in clinical epidemiology from the University of Pennsylvania.245
