Paige Kimble is a prominent figure in the world of competitive spelling, having served as the Executive Director of the Scripps National Spelling Bee for over two decades. Her journey with the Bee began in 1980 when she placed second in the competition.1 The following year, at the age of 13, Kimble (then Paige Pipkin) won the 54th Scripps National Spelling Bee by correctly spelling "sarcophagus".12
Kimble's professional career with the Scripps National Spelling Bee started in 1991, shortly after her college graduation.1 She quickly rose through the ranks and was named director of the program in 1998, later becoming executive director in 2013.1 Under her leadership, the Bee grew in prominence and academic relevance, with nearly 25,000 U.S. schools enrolling each year and the competition being broadcast nationally on ESPN.1
During her tenure, Kimble oversaw various aspects of the competition, including:
- Development of educational and contest materials
- Licensing and promotional opportunities
- Cultivation of the program's network of sponsors
- Coordination of the national television broadcast
Kimble stepped down from her role as executive director in December 2020, concluding a 40-year association with the Bee.1 Her departure marked the end of an era for the competition, which she had helped transform into a nationally recognized event.
Outside of her professional life, Kimble describes herself as a wife, mom, traveler, word collector, and middling pianist.3 She is also a supporter of the Cincinnati Reds baseball team.3
