Owen Embling, the Managing Director at Convex New Zealand Limited, has over 25 years of experience in spearheading sustainable packaging developments.
Since planting his first tree at the age of five, Owen has had a deep-rooted appreciation for nature and trees, leading him to launch reforestation projects such as the one with Sanctuary Mountain Maungatautari to mark the 10th Anniversary of the Econic home compostable packaging he helped develop.
His passion for sustainable packaging stems from the belief in its crucial role in food safety, reducing food waste, and protecting goods, with a focus on minimizing single-use plastic through reusable, recyclable, and compostable solutions.
Owen has been instrumental in pioneering environmentally friendly packaging solutions, starting with cornstarch-based resins in 1995 and producing the first compostable pack in 1996, despite facing challenges like high costs and low demand initially.
His dedication to sustainable packaging was recognized with an Environmental Packaging award from the Packaging Council of New Zealand (Inc) in 2011, showcasing his commitment to a greener future.
While the transition to eco-friendly packaging can be complex due to stringent safety and shelf life requirements, Owen believes that collaboration with forward-thinking customers can lead to innovative and feasible solutions that seemed impossible before.
