Nicholas Matlis

Nicholas Matlis is a physicist and Senior Scientist at DESY (Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron), where he has been part of the Ultrafast Optics and X-rays group in the Center for Free Electron Laser Science since 2015. His research focuses on ultrafast phenomena, laser-plasma interactions, and advanced optical techniques.124

He has a diverse academic and professional background, including a role as a Graduate Researcher at the University of Texas at Austin starting in 1994 and a Postdoctoral position at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. In January 2025, he was appointed as an Associate Professor at Arizona State University.134 His work has been widely cited in the fields of ultrafast electron diffraction, laser-plasma physics, and terahertz (THz) science.25
