Neal Fox
Postdoctoral Fellow in Neurological Surgery
Neal Fox is a scientist and educator who worked as a Postdoctoral Scholar at UCSF from January 2016 to August 2019.1 During his time at UCSF, he used ECoG and computational modeling to study speech perception and production in Dr. Edward F. Chang's lab.1
Fox has an extensive background in cognitive science and education. He holds a Ph.D. and M.S. in Cognitive Science from Brown University, as well as a B.A. in Cognitive Science from the University of Virginia.1 His academic career includes several honors and awards, such as an NSF Graduate Research Fellowship and an F32 National Research Service Award from the National Institutes of Health.1
After his postdoctoral work, Fox transitioned into education. He taught science and computer/data science at Crystal Springs Uplands School from August 2019 to July 2021.1 In August 2021, he founded Sierra STEM, an outdoor education and STEM enrichment nonprofit organization based in June Lake, California, where he currently serves as the Founder and Executive Director.1
Fox describes himself as an interdisciplinary STEM educator, mentor, and researcher with expertise in various scientific fields, including biology, psychology, neuroscience, math, statistics, computer science, and engineering.1 His career path demonstrates a shift from academic research to hands-on education and nonprofit leadership, focusing on experiential learning and outdoor education.1
