Ndseg Program

The National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate (NDSEG) Fellowship Program is a prestigious initiative established by the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) in 1989. It aims to promote education in science and engineering disciplines critical to national defense by awarding fellowships to U.S. citizens pursuing doctoral degrees in relevant fields. Managed by the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE), the program has awarded over 4,400 fellowships since its inception, with an acceptance rate below 7% due to high competition.134

Program Overview

• Eligibility: The NDSEG Fellowship is open to U.S. citizens and nationals who are either at the beginning of their graduate studies or have completed less than two years of full-time graduate study. Applicants must intend to pursue a doctoral degree in designated fields such as engineering, biosciences, and physical sciences.234
• Fellowship Benefits: Recipients receive full tuition coverage and a monthly stipend of approximately $3,600 (totaling about $43,200 annually) for three years. Additional allowances for health insurance and travel are also provided.13
• Application Process: Candidates must submit a research proposal aligned with the DoD’s Broad Agency Announcements (BAAs), along with academic references and transcripts.34
