Mike Whelan

Mike Whelan is a seasoned biotech executive with a strong background in vaccine development, boasting over 25 years of industrial and 8 years of academic experience.

Currently serving as a Project Leader at CEPI (Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations), Mike oversees the development of new vaccines and technologies for neglected diseases, with a recent focus on COVID-19 projects valued at around $500M.

Throughout his career, Mike has held key roles at organizations such as iQur as the R&D Director, contributing to the development of a universal influenza vaccine, and at Onyvax Ltd as the Head of Research, where he worked on therapeutic prostate cancer vaccines that advanced to Phase I and II clinical trials.

Mike's expertise spans across R&D management, negotiation, project leadership, and he has also dabbled in consultancy services, aiding small companies with strategic planning and development.

His academic journey includes a PhD in Immunology from the Royal London Medical School, a BSc in Biochemistry from Queen Mary University of London, and a strong academic record from Regent House with 3 A Levels and 10 O-Levels.
