Mike Nelson

Mike Nelson is a prominent Chief Meteorologist at Denver7 (KMGH-TV), with an extensive career in television weather forecasting spanning over 40 years, including more than 25 years dedicated to Colorado weather. He joined Denver7 in June 2004 and has become a beloved figure in the community, known for his expertise and engaging personality.

Educational Background and Early Career

Nelson earned his degree in Meteorology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He began his career in 1976 at Weather Central, a consulting firm in Madison, where he contributed to developing one of the first computer weather graphics systems for television. This pioneering system is still widely used across the industry today.135

Professional Achievements

Throughout his career, Nelson has held various significant positions:

• Chief Meteorologist at KMOV-TV in St. Louis from 1985 to 1991.
• Chief Meteorologist at KUSA-TV before moving to Denver7.
• He has won 20 Emmy Awards for his excellence in weather broadcasting and was inducted into the Emmys Silver Circle for his long-standing contributions to the industry.256

Nelson is also recognized for his commitment to public education about weather and climate. He has visited numerous schools, sharing his passion for meteorology with children, and has authored two books: The Colorado Weather Book and The Colorado Weather Almanac .146

Personal Life

Mike Nelson is married to Cindy, and they have two adult children, Christiana and Anders, along with three grandchildren. He enjoys spending time with his family and their two dogs, Harper and Tahlula.15

As of February 2024, Nelson announced his plans to retire after a celebrated career, with his final broadcast scheduled for December 12, 2024.25
