    Michelle LaPlaca

    Professor of Biomedical Engineering

Michelle C. LaPlaca, Ph.D. is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering, a joint department between Georgia Tech and Emory University.13 Her research focuses on neurotrauma, particularly traumatic brain injury (TBI), injury biomechanics, and neuroengineering.3

Dr. LaPlaca earned her undergraduate degree in Biomedical Engineering from The Catholic University of America, and her M.S.E. and Ph.D. in Bioengineering from the University of Pennsylvania.1 She joined the faculty at Georgia Tech after completing post-doctoral training in Neurosurgery at the University of Pennsylvania's Head Injury Center.1

    Her specific research interests include:

    • Mechanotransduction mechanisms
    • Cellular tolerances to traumatic loading
    • Plasma membrane damage
    • Biomarker discovery for TBI
    • Development of diagnostic tools for cognitive impairment

Dr. LaPlaca has developed and patented an objective clinical neuropsychological tool called DETECT (Display Enhanced Testing for Cognitive Impairment and Traumatic Brain Injury) for assessing cognitive impairment associated with concussion and mild cognitive impairment.1

Her research is funded by NIH, NSF, and the Coulter Foundation.1 She is also a member of the scientific advisory board for brain4care, a company focused on neurocritical care.2

As of March 2025, Dr. LaPlaca continues to serve as Associate Professor and recently became the Associate Chair for Faculty Development in the Woodruff School at Georgia Tech.4
