As part of the QA team, I am responsible to ensure that our systems meet the agreed customers' performance requirements. In particular, my main activities include:
• Introduced the usage of monitoring tools. I have deployed and maintained the internal monitoring infrastructure (Graphite) as well as developed custom tools
• Development of data-mining tools aimed at gaining insights about users' behaviour
• Execution and analysis of performance tests; technical and executive presentations
• Performance deep dive, including database query optimisation, static code analysis and code profiling 
• Identifying and solving bottlenecks, performance and scaling issues
• Capacity planning of the whole solution, including network and database dimensioning
• Validation of new components for our software stack, e.g., MariaDB Galera Cluster

As part of the R&D team I am responsible for the continuous development and improvement of the  backend systems powering the Appway platform, including API design, benchmarking and performance optimisation.
As a backend engineer I use Java, Jira, JUnit, Hazelcast, Tomcat, Ant, SVN, TeamCity, relational as well as NoSQL databases (Cassandra).

As part of the capacity, scaling and infrastructure group of Demonware (the IT backbone of Activision Blizzard) I am responsible to ensure that existing and future resources are utilized optimally. I also provide troubleshooting expertise and advice on software and hardware scaling issues as well as assistance to developer teams in the design of new services. As a capacity planning engineer I use python, R, Graphite, gnuplot, Excel and GNU Octave. 
• Developed a suite of capacity planning tools for Demonware’s infrastructure, composed of hundreds of services running in multiple data-centers 
• Produce capacity utilisation reporting and forecasting for use in budgetary and planning processes 
• Working with developers and the rest of the operations team to build capacity models for new 
services and features 
• Built better predictive alerting and visualisation tools (e.g., dashboards) and scripts 
• Identiﬁcation of capacity problems before they happen 
• Troubleshooting of servers and systems (including analytical modeling such as queuing theory 
and convex optimization techniques) 
• Performance tuning of MySQL servers
• Worked on AAA video-games such as Diablo 3 RoS, Destiny, and a number of Call of Duty and Skylanders titles.

Capacity Planning Engineer

Studied a number of optimization problems related to Cloud computing, e.g., an analytical model 
telling a PaaS provider how to best mix ‘reserved’ and ‘on-demand’ instances’ or a probabilistic 
algorithm allowing the use of ‘spot instances’ to build highly available services. My algorithms are
implemented in Java and R. 
• Analyzed the feasibility of “spot instances” for hosting online services and designed a spot in- 
stance price forecasting algorithm 
• Designed error-resilient policies for resource allocation and admission control 
• Contributed to “Cloud Computing Economics” and supervised M.Sc. students

• Designed an auto scaling algorithm which was resilient to traﬃc forecasting errors (Java, Nginx). According to a number of tests which were run on a full replica of Wikipedia deployed on Amazon EC2 the algorithm outperforms Amazon’s auto-scaling mechanism 
• Implemented allocation policies for container based data centers (Python, HAProxy)

My Ph.D. thesis studied the problem of meeting Service Level Agreements (SLAs) by means of 
dynamic policies for resource allocation and selective admission control. During my studies I have 
used a number of technologies such as Java, Apache Axis2 and Tomcat, Ant and JUnit. 
• Designed algorithms for resource allocation, service diﬀerentiation and admission control 
• Developed a QoS-aware layer-7 reverse proxy with load balancing capabilities which stores mes- 
sages which can not be executed immediately.

Applied research on QoS aware API Gateways.
During this period my colleagues and I published several papers and filed one patent.

I developed a protocol based on the publish-subscrive paradigm providing a Distributed Shared 
Memory abstraction to event-based applications (e.g., multiplayer online games). The algorithm 
has been implemented in Java and relies on Java Message Service (JMS) 
• Designed a consensus protocol 
• Developed a Distributed Shared Memory abstraction on top of JMS 
• Built a proof-of-concept application (stock price monitor)
