Michael Markowsky

Michael Markowsky is a faculty member at Emily Carr University of Art and Design (ECUAD) in Vancouver, Canada. He has been teaching at ECUAD since 2013, primarily in the Illustration and Foundation departments.1 Currently, he teaches drawing and illustration courses, as well as creative process classes for Foundation students.12
As an artist, Markowsky's practice is diverse, focusing mainly on drawing and oil painting, with an emphasis on portraiture and landscapes. He is known for creating art in unconventional and extreme conditions, often working outside of traditional studio settings.1 Some of his notable achievements include:
- Becoming the first person to make a painting at the North Pole
- Creating drawings while flying faster than the speed of sound in a fighter jet
- Participating in the Canadian Forces Artist Program, also known as the "War Artist" program1
Markowsky has ambitious goals for his artistic career, including a declared intention to make a painting on the moon by January 1, 2030. He has been actively preparing for this potential lunar journey by creating artwork in extreme conditions.1
In addition to his work as an artist and educator, Markowsky has other creative pursuits:
- He has toured across Canada twice as part of the indie-rock band "Brasstronaut," where he projected live paintings during performances.3
- He has written a novel about his experience drawing while walking the Camino de Santiago in Spain.1
- He is currently working on illustrating a graphic novel biography about the death of Tom Thomson.1
