Michael Joyner
Professor at Mayo Clinic
Michael Joyner is a prominent American anesthesiologist and physiologist, currently serving as the Frank R. and Shari Caywood Professor of Anesthesiology at the Mayo Clinic. His extensive research primarily focuses on exercise physiology, human performance, and blood pressure regulation. Joyner's laboratory has been continuously funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) since 1993, and he has made significant contributions to understanding muscle and skin blood flow, thermoregulation, hypoxia, and pandemic preparedness.126
Early Life and Education
Born in 1958 in Lafayette, Louisiana, Joyner moved to Tucson, Arizona, where he attended the University of Arizona for both his undergraduate and medical degrees. His interest in physiology began during his undergraduate years when he participated in a study on lactic acid and distance running performance. He completed his residency in anesthesiology at the Mayo Clinic.16
Career Achievements
Joyner has held various leadership positions at the Mayo Clinic, including Deputy Director and Associate Dean for Research from 2005 to 2010. He was named a Distinguished Investigator by his colleagues in 2010 and received several prestigious awards, including the Walter B. Cannon Award from the American Physiological Society in 2013 and the BARDA Medal for his contributions during the COVID-19 pandemic.168
In addition to his research endeavors, Joyner is an advocate for academic freedom and has been vocal about issues related to scientific reductionism. He has also faced controversy; notably, he filed a lawsuit against the Mayo Clinic in 2023 over disciplinary actions taken against him for comments made during media interviews.47
Research Contributions
Joyner's work has been widely published and cited, with over 981 research works contributing to a deeper understanding of human physiology under stress conditions such as exercise and blood loss. His research not only informs clinical practices but also engages with broader public discussions about health and performance.58
Joyner remains active in both research and clinical practice at the Mayo Clinic while also consulting for various organizations in the exercise and biomedical fields.36
