Michael Farrell is the Co-Founder of The Forest Farmers, LLC, based in Lake Placid, New York.1 He holds a PhD in Natural Resources from Cornell University, where he focused on the growth potential of the maple syrup industry.1 Farrell previously served as the Director of the Uihlein Forest at Cornell University for about 13 years, specializing in maple and birch sap and syrup industries.1
In 2016, Farrell co-founded The Forest Farmers, LLC, which manages nearly 10,000 acres for timber and non-timber products.12 The company produces a variety of tree syrups, including maple, birch, walnut, and beech, under the brand New Leaf Tree Syrups.2 Their operations span across New York and Vermont, with sugarhouses in Lyon Mt, NY and Marshfield, VT.23
Farrell served as CEO of The Forest Farmers from 2017 to June 2023.1 The company focuses on developing new markets for high-value forest products through innovation and strategic partnerships.1 They are committed to sustainable forestry practices, including a carbon easement that ensures they never cut more trees than the forest grows in a given year.2
