Michael Essien is a transformative leader dedicated to whole system reform in education to enhance outcomes for students, teachers, and parents. Through his efforts, he revamped the professional learning community, fostering a greater sense of community and belonging among students and teachers alike. His initiatives led to significant enhancements in school-wide academics, socio-emotional learning, and overall culture and climate.
With a Master of Education (MEd) in Education and a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in African-American/Black Studies from the University of California, Berkeley, Essien is well-equipped with academic knowledge to drive educational change.
Previously, Michael Essien served as the Director of Community Schools & Partnerships at the Alameda County Office of Education and as the Chief Executive Officer of Essien Education Group. He also contributed as a Peer Resources Advisory Board Member at San Francisco Peer Resources and participated in workshops across various education-focused organizations, including the National Education Association (NEA). Essien's passion for education reform has led him to be a keynote speaker at multiple events, including the 4th District Legislative PTA Meeting in Sacramento.
His experience extends to hosting workshops for educational agencies serving multiple school districts, highlighting strategies for student success, and contributing to arts education programs. Through roles such as Superintendent's Appointed Member and Co-Chair of various educational committees, Essien has actively worked to improve educational policies and practices.
