Michael Corris

Michael Corris is a prominent artist, art historian, and writer, currently serving as a Professor Emeritus of Art in the Division of Art at the Meadows School of the Arts, Southern Methodist University (SMU) in Dallas, Texas. His academic background includes both a bachelor's and master's degree in studio art and art history from Brooklyn College, where he studied under notable figures such as Harry Holtzman and Jimmy Ernst. He later earned a PhD in the history of art from University College London in 1996, focusing on the work of Ad Reinhardt.12
Corris has had a significant impact on contemporary art through his involvement with the Conceptual art group Art & Language, where he began working in 1971. He contributed to the group's journal, Art-Language, and was a founding editor of The Fox, an artist-run journal that explored the political and social dimensions of artistic practice. His artistic work has been widely exhibited internationally and is included in major collections such as those of the Museum of Modern Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art.12
In addition to his artistic practice, Corris has published extensively on modern and contemporary art. His notable works include Conceptual Art: Theory, Myth and Practice (2004) and monographs on artists like David Diao and Ad Reinhardt. He founded the Free Museum of Dallas in 2010, which served as an exhibition space at SMU until 2014.12
