    Michael Balazs

Autonomy Futurist & Director of Early Career Programs for MITRE National Security

Dr. Michael A. Balazs is a Technology Integrator at MITRE, focusing on coordinating internal research and government transition. He manages a portfolio of small Unmanned Aerial System (sUAS) programs and provides support for counter-sUAS initiatives. He is a leader in non-traditional computational clusters.

Dr. Balazs is recognized for his work on the commercial-off-the-shelf ISR program, utilizing the commercial smartphone industry to create an open and mobile ISR system. He leads research efforts that benefit both government R&D and field operations, adapting to changing operational environments.

Apart from directing C-UAS strategy, he co-led the MITRE Challenge for Countering Unauthorized Aerial Systems, evaluating global technologies to detect and interdict small drone threats. The results of this challenge guide R&D efforts and influence policies both domestically and internationally.

His contributions have earned him numerous awards and have been highlighted in prestigious publications like the Economist, WIRED Magazine, Fortune, and National Geographic's Breakthroughs.

Prior to MITRE, Dr. Balazs earned his Ph.D. in High-Energy Particle Physics from the University of Virginia. He played a key role at the Large Hadron Collider in Geneva, Switzerland, contributing to the design and construction of the Compact Muon Solenoid detector while exploring dark matter and the Higgs boson. His earlier work at the University of Virginia's Quantum Optics lab involved developing systems for quantum computing using entangled photons. He graduated with honors from Johns Hopkins University with a dual degree in Physics and Computer Science.
