Melissa Chiu

Melissa Chiu is currently the Director of the Committee on National Statistics (CNSTAT) at the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, a position she assumed in February 2023.13 Prior to this, she served as the Deputy Director of CNSTAT from March 2021 to February 2023.3

Chiu has an extensive background in government statistics and data:

1. She worked at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs from June 2018 to March 2021, holding positions such as Acting Executive Director, Director of Analytics, and Director of Data Governance & Dissemination.3

2. At the U.S. Census Bureau, she held various roles from 2005 to 2018, including Data and Evaluation Outreach Manager, Chief of the Administrative Records Research Branch, and Chief of the Industry and Occupation Statistics Branch.3

3. She briefly served as a detailee at the Office of Management and Budget's Statistical and Science Policy Branch.3

Chiu's educational background includes:

• BS degrees in Mathematics and Statistics (Honors) from the University of Michigan
• MS in Statistics from the University of Washington
• MA and C.Phil (ABD) in Sociology from the University of California, Los Angeles3

Throughout her career, Chiu has been involved in improving data architecture, governance, processing, and collection operations. She has experience in directing quantitative social science analytic products, methodological studies, and evidence-building initiatives.3

It's worth noting that this Melissa Chiu should not be confused with another Melissa Chiu who is the director of the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, DC.2
