    Technology governance and accountability

    Meg Young is a researcher focusing on government use of information systems with a keen interest in making technologies more accountable to the public.

    Utilizing ethnographic methods and participatory design approaches, Meg works on eliciting ways to enhance government technology and policy responsiveness to public needs.

    She has conducted extensive fieldwork in Seattle, Washington starting from 2015, delving into local policy debates on privacy, data systems procurement, public-private partnerships, public engagement, and surveillance.

    Meg Young has a strong publication record, appearing in respected technology policy and data studies venues such as FAT *, Big Data & Society, CHI, Ethics & Information Technology, and Berkeley Technology Law Journal.

    Her engagement with local government and community stakeholders is focused on addressing the policy implications of government data collection, use, and sharing.

    Noteworthy achievements include contributing recommendations to the City of Seattle resulting in the development of the Seattle Privacy Program and smart cities strategy, as well as leading a project to create the Algorithmic Equity Toolkit aimed at enhancing understanding of public sector algorithmic systems.
