Early Life and Career

Chapman graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1966 with a Bachelor's degree in Economics, where he was also a member of the football team.3 He later obtained an MBA from Columbia Business School in 1969.3

After business school, Chapman joined Kidder, Peabody & Co., where he founded the Financial Futures Department and co-founded the High-Yield Bond and Merchant Banking Group.3 He was elected President and CEO of Kidder, Peabody & Co. in 1987, while also serving as President and Chief Operating Officer of the parent company, Kidder, Peabody Group, Inc.3

In 1989, Chapman joined Nomura Securities, where he served as Chairman of Nomura Holding America Inc., Managing Director of Nomura Securities Co., Ltd., and Chairman of Nomura Europe Holding plc.3

Philanthropy and Honors

Chapman has been involved in various philanthropic efforts, including donating $5 million to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill to build a new building named Chapman Hall in his honor.3 In 1996, he received the William R. Davie Award, the highest honor given by the UNC trustees.2
