Matthias Gelbmann

Matthias Gelbmann is the co-founder and Managing Director of DB-Engines, a knowledge base and ranking system for database management systems.12 He is also a consultant at solid IT, an IT consultancy firm based in Vienna, Austria.1 Gelbmann has expertise in database management systems, artificial intelligence, compiler construction, embedded software, Internet technologies, and software processes.1
Before co-founding DB-Engines in 2012, Gelbmann worked at companies such as Alcatel, Bank Austria Group, and Philips in various roles including Software Developer, Software Architect, Software Quality Manager, Project Manager, and Line Manager.1 He studied computer science and applied mathematics in Vienna.1
Gelbmann and his team started DB-Engines as a project to evaluate database options, which evolved into a comprehensive ranking system for database management systems.2 Under his leadership, DB-Engines grew from initially ranking 38 systems to now covering 417 database systems.2
Recently, in June 2024, DB-Engines was acquired by Redgate Software, with Gelbmann expressing confidence that the site will continue to thrive under its new ownership while maintaining its commitment to providing objective, independent data and insights to users.3
