Matthew Smith

Matthew Smith is the Co-founder and Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of Embr Labs, a Boston-based technology startup known for its patented wearable thermal technology.12 He has been with the company since its founding in June 2013 and has held various leadership roles, including Chief Scientific Officer (CSO) from January 2016 to September 2022, before transitioning to his current CTO position.2

Smith has a strong academic background, holding a Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and a B.S. in the same field from The Johns Hopkins University.2 Prior to co-founding Embr Labs, he worked as a Postdoctoral Associate at MIT in both the Grossman and Gradečak Groups, focusing on advanced materials research.2

Embr Labs, under Smith's leadership, has developed the Embr Wave, a wearable device that provides personalized temperature control to help manage hot flashes and other thermal discomfort issues.3 The company has grown significantly, with their products now used by over 100,000 people in 177 countries.3

Smith is also actively involved in research and development, with Embr Labs conducting multiple clinical trials and recently publishing a groundbreaking study on hot flashes in prostate cancer patients in Nature Communications.45
